Its development is connected to African-derived cooking practices brought to the Caribbean, where leafy greens, long-simmered broths, and assertive seasoning formed the basis of one-pot meals designed to be filling and economical, with local ingredients such as callaloo and Scotch bonnet shaping the Jamaican form of the dish.
